After graduation in 1995, my career journey began in Cambridge, where I lived with my cousin, a climate researcher at Selwyn College. While helping him with his PhD thesis, painstakingly typing up his research notes as he suffered from RSI, I gained a newfound respect for scientific rigour. Though I didn’t realise it at the time, those moments sparked a fascination with translating complex science into compelling, accessible stories.

My next destination was London’s entertainment industry. As the lead designer for Disney’s The Lion King Musical (West End and Broadway productions) for five years, I worked on omni-channel campaigns that taught me how to build brands that captivate audiences. These skills, honed in a fast-paced environment, would later become invaluable in more purpose-driven projects.

In 2002, a grizzly bear encounter at a Yellowstone National Park campsite etched itself into my memory. Early one morning, we woke to the sound of barking dogs, a thin canvas away from a 700-pound (320kg) male bear. I don’t like to think about the outcome of 4-inch claws versus our tent! My friend and I had underestimated the wilderness, learning the hard way to respect nature’s raw power. This close call became a metaphor for my environmental ethos: we must all act with care and respect for the natural world.

The pandemic was my ‘awakening from hibernation’ moment. With time to reflect on my creative career, I realised the four sectors I’d worked in academic publishing, science and research, human rights, and mental health are all interconnected with climate action. Each represents a unique thread in the tapestry of positive change, guiding me to dedicate my skills to climate tech and environmental organisations.

Working in unconventional spaces like a retired RAF Fighter Command station, a barn conversion, and a studio converted from a pigsty, I embraced the qualities of resilience and adaptability. Each project I was briefed on, whether branding, campaigns, data infographics, exhibitions, or websites—reinforced my belief in design as a catalyst for change.

In 2022, I joined 1% for the Planet, committing 1% of our annual income to support environmental organizations. That same year, I co-founded the research team Break Into Climate, which connects creative talent with climate organisations and businesses to drive change.
